The Program in 2017

In 2017, the program acquired a different format from the previous few years – due to evolution, limited budget and the team’s decision that it’s time to do something new – as it’s also the anniversary year, 5 years since activEco launch in 2013!

  1. the Social Entrepreneurship line, part of activEco in 2013-2016, became a separate program: “Social Entrepreneurship – Make It Matter”
  2. the familiar structure of three basic seminars – Impulse, Project Management and Harvesting – was abolished in the favour of a new one – “Challenge Workshops”.

Why “Challenge Workshops”?

After four years of broad work on sustainable development, the team decided it’s time to gather the synergy of our alumni and other activists, and focus on concrete issues that need solutions on local and national level – and bring us closer to Moldotopia 2040.

So, in 2017, the anniversary year, the activEco team directly invites the participants to meet the proposed Challenges at the Challenge Workshops (each one lasting two days, Saturday & Sunday), and, together, work out the solutions that they could implement.

The topics of 2017 are as follows:

  1. Challenge #1 – Organic Agriculture, May 5-7, 2017: how to boost Organic Agriculture in Moldova?
  2. Challenge #2 – Sustainable Mobility, May 19-21, 2017: how to change Mobility in our region to a more sustainable and human?
  3. Challenge #3 – Green Home & Work Spaces, September 15-17: how to change our way to “produce” and consume energy? How to make our home & work spaces greener?
  4. Challenge #4 – Tree Growing, October 13-15: how to have more trees to Moldova?

Challenge #1: Organic Agriculture

The first activEco-2017 Challenge Workshop – “Organic Agriculture” – took place on May 5-7, 2017, in collaboration with another EcoVisio program, ActiveOrganic. ActiveOrganic was launched in 2017 and is dedicated to spreading practices of organic agriculture and creating a community of responsible farmers.

The seminar – the first one for ActiveOrganic as well – gathered 30 participants from over 20 localities and 17 districts of Moldova, with their ages ranged from 18 to 60-something years. Together, they explored the topics such as Basic principles of Organic Agriculture and Permaculture, Soil Protection and Improvement, Composting and Producing your own Organic Fertilizers. However, the most important aspect, in team’s opinion, was the intense exchange of practices, ideas and contacts among the participants – we were happy to see activEco participants so naturally joining the larger community of interested and passionate people.

The project ideas are still in the process of development, and the participants are welcome to take part in other ActiveOrganic modules (six in total), which they gladly do.

Challenge #2: Sustainable Mobility

The second activEco-2017 Challenge Workshop – “Sustainable Mobility” – took place on May 19-21, 2017. This time, the key questions for the 19 dedicated heads, minds and hearts that gathered in Riscova was: why is the mobility becoming a challenge to our systems? how to create transport system in our region that better fit to the needs of the 21 century? what can we do together about it?

The age of the participants ranged from 15 to 64 years, and that added to the wonderful diversity of the group and of the ideas. In the process, 6 project ideas appeared that ought to be implemented by September 29th, 2017.

As a bonus, the team presented the #BikesCrossBorders project – an opportunity for 15 bike activists (and future bike activists) to get a bike that was gifted to them by German citizens. But first, they had to face the challenge of getting this bike from Iasi – travel there, mount the bike and cross the Romanian-Moldovan border with their friend on two wheels, as the project’s name suggested.

Challenge #3: Green Home & Work Spaces

On September 15-17, 2017, the activEco team was happy to come again to Eco-Training Center at Eco-Village Moldova, to hold the Third activEco Challenge seminar: Green Home & Work Spaces. The venue, with its ecological buildings, composting toilets, rich garden and vegetarian / vegan kitchen couldn’t have been chosen better – the participants could learn firsthand about advantages and particularities of “greening” their environment, and got inspired to launch 7 projects in their localities, offices and homes.

Challenge #4: Growing Trees

On October 13-15, 2017, we had the last of the activEco Challenge seminars in that year – Challenge #4: Growing Trees. During the seminar, participants met activists from WikiWoods and Seed It Forward initiatives, discussed the main questions and challenges of growing trees, went to a small study visit through different types of plantings, learned how to plant a tree and care about it, collected seeds, planned their own plantings and got consultations from tree-planting activists and forestry engineer. More trees are coming!
